...WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM THURSDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING... * WHAT...Blizzard conditions possible. Total snow accumulations between 4 and 10 inches possible. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph. Visibility reduced to one-quarter mile at times. * WHERE...Central Alaska Peninsula, Chignik, and Southern Alaska Peninsula. * WHEN...From Thursday afternoon through Friday morning. * IMPACTS...Visibilities reduced to one quarter mile or less due to blowing snow. Travel could be very difficult. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...A strong low pressure system in the northern Pacific will approach the Aleutians and Alaska Peninsula Thursday. Low position Thursday afternoon is still uncertain but areas such as Cold Bay and King Cove have the potential to develop blizzard conditions Thursday afternoon into Friday morning. Gusty winds out of the northeast may drive blowing snow into the area, potentially reducing visibility to one-quarter mile or less at times.
A Winter Storm Watch for blizzard conditions means there is a potential for falling and/or blowing snow with strong winds and extremely poor visibilities. This can lead to whiteout conditions and make travel very hazardous.
